Feathered Edge Tutorial

In this tutorial I will show you how to enhance an image by giving it a feathered edge. First save the image that I have shown here. Left click then right click to save to your image file. Open the image in your paint shop pro, or use an image of your choice. Name this image tree.

Step 2: Create a new image, color white, size 350 x 230. This image will be larger than the tree image. Keep in mind, always use a larger image than the first image of your choice. Click on the Dropper Tool, go to your tree image and select a color, once you have selected a color click on the Flood fill tool. Now click on the white image, this will place the color that you selected. Once you have done this, create a New Raster Layer. At the top of the tool bar you will see Layers, Select New Raster Layer. Name the new layer tree

Step 3: Now that you have chosen the desired color, place this image to the side. We will come back to it later. Go back to your tree image. Click on the Free Hand tool, set settings on the Tool Pallet to Feather 20. Now draw around the tree image, staying close to the tree, the Fill tool will expand quite far so you want to be careful not to go off the edge. You may need to do this several times to get the part of the image you want. Important Leave the lines around the image! See below.

Step 4: While the marching lines are still visible click on the Drop Shadow Tool the only settings that you will need to change is Opacity to 100 and the Blur to 1.2. Select a color. I chose a dark green, Click apply. On my image I applied the Drop Shadow two times. You may also choose different settings to get another effect. See Below.

Step 5: Go back to the image that you made in the beginning. Making sure that you are on the Layer named tree. Paste the image to the blank. See Below

Step 6: Right click on the image with the Free Hand Tool. This will get rid of the marching lines. After you have done this click on your Layer Pallet and select Background Layer. While on this layer apply a texture. Click  Texture Tool on the effects menu. Choose a texture that is not course, use a faint texture. Play around with the settings to get the desired effect. Apply the texture of your choice. WALA! Congratulations your done. See Below.

Tip: Adding lights to the tree image will give it a beautiful glow. So don't forget to play around with different settings.
